Continuing on my last article on mentorship,
Mentees should focus on developing a variety of skills to maximise the benefits they receive from their mentoring relationships and to enhance their overall personal and professional effectiveness.
Here are some specific skills that mentees should consider developing:
A. Interpersonal Skills
Communication
The ability to articulate thoughts clearly and listen actively is crucial. This includes both verbal and written communication.
Active Listening
Many a times, or most of the times, we listen just to respond. When someone is saying something, we spend all the time in preparing answers / counter arguments to what this person is saying. Developing the skill to truly listen to others, understand their points of view, and respond thoughtfully is most important.
Emotional Intelligence
Understanding and managing one’s emotions, as well as empathising with the emotions of others, can improve interpersonal relationships.
Feedback Reception
Learning to accept and incorporate constructive criticism without becoming defensive or dismissive is essential for growth.
B. Technical and Professional Skills

Building the ability to establish and maintain professional relationships can lead to new opportunities and collaborations.
C. Personal Development Skills
Self-Reflection
The ability to critically reflect on experiences, behaviours, and outcomes to learn and grow.
Goal Setting
Developing skills for setting measurable, achievable goals and creating actionable plans to reach them.
Resilience
Building the capacity to recover from setbacks and maintain a positive attitude toward challenges.
Adaptability
Learning to be flexible and adjust to new circumstances or challenges as they arise is vital in dynamic work environments.
D. Organisational Skills
Time Management
Enhancing the ability to prioritise tasks, manage schedules, and efficiently allocate time for various responsibilities.
Organisation
Developing systems for organising work and maintaining / optimising productivity through effective planning and resource management.
E. Leadership and Teamwork Skills
Collaboration
Learning to work effectively in teams, leveraging the strengths of others while contributing positively to group dynamics.
Conflict Resolution
Developing skills to navigate and resolve conflicts in a constructive manner.
Influence and Persuasion
Learning how to effectively influence others and advocate for ideas or initiatives is useful for advancement.
F. Technical Literacy Skills
Digital Literacy
Familiarity with relevant technology, software, and tools that are prevalent in one’s industry enhances efficiency and effectiveness.
