Practical Skills – Returns without investment?

We keep getting requests for training inhouse legal teams from best and biggest of corporate houses quite frequently. Despite our pleading about a busy practice and difficulties in taking out time for such trainings, they insist to consider and discuss.

More often than not, after a lot of calls, emails, proposals, counter proposals, following is the summary of most corporates’ position:

1. We want our people to learn everything (under the sun, moon and clouds) about contract drafting, reviewing and negotiation skills

2. (Notwithstanding 1 above) We don’t have much time

3. We cannot train on weekends (need holidays)

4. We cannot train on weekdays (work will suffer)

5. We cannot train in outside office hours (there are none, people are working endless hours anyways 😊)

6. We cannot train slowly, it becomes boring

7. We cannot train too fast, people wouldn’t understand anything

Last, but not the least:

8. We do not have any budget for this (while a small session or two may work for our clients, why should non-clients expect days’ long sessions out of our billable hours for free?)

And we are like ….

Most of the times, it’s a waste of our time and energy – many people are actually not serious about practical trainings / skills.

Today’s generation likes instant gratification, yes.

However, any craft takes time and attention to become proficient at. Today, no one wants to invest any time and efforts, keeping money aside for a moment.

Waiting for some magic pill to be invented – administer to legal professionals and they become experts instantly.

Talk of capital gains without investments.

Everyone wants to enjoy the bull ride on a stock exchange but have you (i) carried any research; (ii) bought any scrips; and (iii) taken risk, are some of the pertinent questions.

No pains, no gains.

Will tell you our law schools experience some other time, that’s interesting too.
